How scoring works in Yatzy

Yatzy is the Scandinavian variant of Yahtzee with 15 categories instead of 13. The upper section (Ones through Sixes) and its 63-point threshold are the same, but the upper bonus in Yatzy is +50 (not +35). The lower section adds One Pair (the sum of the highest pair) and Two Pairs (sum of both pairs). Three of a Kind and Four of a Kind in Yatzy score the sum of the MATCHING dice only — not the sum of all 5 dice like in Yahtzee. Small Straight (1-5) is a fixed 15, Large Straight (2-6) is a fixed 20. House (Full House) scores the sum of all dice — not a flat 25. Chance scores the sum of all 5 dice with no requirement. Yatzy (five of a kind) is a flat 50. Each category may be used only once per game. Highest grand total wins.

Yatzy scorecard — common questions

What's the difference between Yatzy and Yahtzee?+

Yatzy is the Scandinavian original (1950s); Yahtzee is the American version (1956). Yatzy has 15 categories vs Yahtzee's 13 — it adds One Pair and Two Pairs in the lower section. Yatzy also doesn't have the joker rule for multiple five-of-a-kinds. See our Yahtzee vs Yatzy comparison page for the full breakdown.

How does the One Pair / Two Pairs category work?+

One Pair scores the sum of the two matching dice (highest pair if you have multiple). Two Pairs scores the sum of all four dice across both pairs (e.g., two 4s + two 6s = 4+4+6+6 = 20). Both must contain a real pair — you can't just call your best two dice 'a pair' if they don't match.

Is there an upper-section bonus in Yatzy?+

Many Yatzy house rules use the same upper-section bonus structure as Yahtzee (+50 if you total ≥ 63), but it's not universal — the original Scandinavian rules don't always include it. Check your group's house rules before starting.

How long does a Yatzy game take?+

Typically 20-30 minutes for 2-4 players, similar to Yahtzee. The extra two categories add a little length but the game still moves fast.

Is it really free? Do I need to sign up?+

Yes, free, no signup. The scorecard runs entirely in your browser — no account, no app to install, no tile data sent anywhere. Ads on the page keep the site running.

How do I share the scorecard with my table?+

Tap the QR code button at the top of any scorecard. Everyone scans it with their phone camera and gets a live view of the same scorecard — they can watch the leaderboard update in real time as you tap.

Do scores save if I close the tab?+

Yes — the in-progress scorecard is saved automatically in your browser. Open the same scorecard URL on the same device and your scores will still be there. To clear, tap Reset.

Does it work on mobile?+

Yes — every scorecard is built phone-first. Big tap targets, big numbers, designed to be passed around the table. Bookmark to your home screen for one-tap access.

Can I undo a tap?+

Yes — every scorecard has an Undo button at the top. It rolls back the last 20 score changes. The Reset button starts the whole game over.

What if my game isn't listed?+

Use the Any Board Game generic scorecard — it gives you flexible round columns and editable labels so you can score basically any round-based game. If you want a specific game added, the AI Prompts Library link in the footer has a feedback form.
